What changes would you like to see in Nursing leadership in Nigeria? By George Nnamchi (NRN, USRN, RON)

Image
I believe, nursing profession is an important profession in healthcare system, acting as a  catalyst to other healthcare professionals to providing quality, and optimal care to the patients. It is a dynamic and challenging profession requiring engaging and inspiring role models and leaders (Scully, 2015).  Nursing profession has improved over the years, and has made healthcare system very relevant in our society. However, no profession is able to progress without leadership and management. Good leaders ensure there is a professional growth, and unity. Embracing challenges, change and innovation. In addition, they are able to integrate research; evidence-based practice for the development of the profession and for improving patient's outcomes.  I will like to see nursing leaders, using their capacity to influence the legislatures and those in the arms of government to pass, support, and sponsor bills. This will enable nursing profession grow tremendously, while providing safe care t

Is "Black lives matter" a public health issue?

Image
Is mental health a public health issue? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), public health seeks to promote health; prolong life and prevent diseases. It helps individuals, organisations and even communities to address issues of preventable disease, mortality and disability.  While mental health, helps to improve the general well-being of an individual, their quality of life, it is protective against acute and chronic physical illnesses. Mental health goes beyond an absence of mental illness. It includes, promotion of mental health and general well being. Thereby, tackling preventable diseases, morbidity and mortality. This shows that mental health is a public health issue. The challenges faced by people of colour (especially blacks) include: Non-acceptance Racial profiling/being unfairly stopped by the police and police brutality. Unemployment and rejection from schools and platforms. Institutional racism, blacks world wide still face institutional hurdles to get a good j

Implications of adopting the 'Madagascar cure' by African countries. By Prof. A.O. Nwadinigwe and Ugomma

Image
The Madagascar Corona virus cure, is from the plant called Artemisia annua (Family Asteraceae) also known as sweet wormwood, native in temperate Asia. It contains Artemisinin. Artemisinin is effective against Plasmodium falciparum, a highly resistant strain of malaria parasite. In 2005, China used Artemisinin to treat Corona virus Sars-CoV-2.    Why did we deviate from single malaria therapy?  The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the Artemisinin-based combination Therapy (ACT), to replace chloroquine and single therapy antimalarial medication, when it was discovered that the malaria parasites were becoming more resistant to single therapies. The ACT provides a 2 phased treatment for malaria. According to the WHO (2019),  the artemisinin reduces the number of parasites in the first few days of taking the medication, while the partner drug, eliminates remaining parasites. The malaria parasite can easily overcome single therapies and form resistance to it. Especially, when peo

Living in Nigeria in the time of Covid-19 (Worship Centers and Transportation) By Dr Nonye and Ugomma

Image
Corona virus does not seem to be disappearing anytime soon. Countries are trying to adjust their system to reduce the spread and also promote easing lock down. In other words, 'adjusting life to accommodate covid-19 in the society,' till it is eradicated.  Nigeria has unique characteristics, therefore the methodology adopted to stop the spread should be tailored to the needs of Nigerians.  The general message still remains, stay at home; keep 2 meters apart; wash/sanitize your hands and build your immunity. Worship centers in Nigeria: Nigeria has large population, making it very difficult for people to stay 2 meters apart in worship centers. So what can we do? Stay at home. When the lock down has been eased, continue to stay at home and worship in your house. If you insist that you need to go to your place of worship after lock-down has been eased, stay 2 meters apart.  Church administrators can start now, to consider no contact type of worship. Pews can be marked 2 meters apa

Hi Njideka,  Welcome to Nurse's nuggets and career information. You have an organization called "Let's talk it through". May we know what it means. "Let's talk it through" is in the process of becoming a Non-profit organization (NGO) . I am establishing this NGO to give free counselling sessions for persons of all ages suffering from depression. It was established by bringing together a group of seasoned counselors to work with me.  Amazing work. Depression and mental illness does not seem to be getting the attention it needs to get in Nigeria. At the moment we recognize that you cannot physically meet with clients, so how do you carry this task out? We create webinars, creating awareness and enlightening people on the dangers of depression and practical ways to deal with it.  The NGO is also into training of mothers caring for children living with physical disability in Nigeria. I tutor them on practical ways on raising children with disabilities and ho

Have you had patients that refused to go home?

Post by Oruka Jacinta Gate Please my people help me....the challenges of private practice. A teenage pregnant sick patient is rushed to your facility by a lady who claimed that her brother is the one responsible for the pregnancy. She pleaded that treatment be commenced to save the lady's life even without making any deposit with the reassurance that she would run around for money in the course of the treatment. She kept coming the following few days after the young lady was admitted, reassuring that she is running around for money. But since she realized that the young lady has been stabilized medically, the supposed next of kin was never seen again. All attempts to reach her on phone failed as she blocked all numbers calling from the facility where the pregnant lady was admitted. Unfortunately days ran into weeks and about to run into month, yet no other relative, no friends, or even enemies has shown up. The young lady is said to have left home and lost her family's contact s

Do you wish to practice outside Nigeria (United Kingdom)

Image
This is quite an exciting and interesting topic. Some nurses love to practice in their country. Which I commend and applaud. Others may want to practice outside Nigeria.  Where do you stand??? You can potentially practice nursing in our beloved country, USA, UK, Canada and Australia. Basically you need to register as a nurse in any country that you are going to practice. For UK Nursing registration: IELTS academic CBT-competency based test Document verification OSCE-this is done when you are in UK. I always tell people you do not need an agency to help you move and practice in UK. You can do it yourself. I am happy to guide you and even connect you with employers. Note you should not also pay any agency. Big waste of money. Comment below with your questions and i am happy to respond and guide you. XOXO

Do you pick School of Nursing or University??? part 2

Image
Oh let's get down to the cons. This may get a bit controversial  and emotional.   SON cons: Sometimes, I said sometimes ooo, the tutors treat the students like they are still in primary school. It can be quite annoying but once you graduate you laugh it off. The clinical posting were a lot. But then the experience is worth it. You may feel like you have not completed your education because your childhood mates all have degrees. So you need to get into a University which is another 4 years. It is tedious.  University Cons: Hostels/living accommodations were "ewwish''. But you can live outside the campus if you want to. Some schools have common lecture rooms with other departments. Like you will have same anatomy classes with radiology, physiotherapy students, medical lab. students and medical students. Trust me the lecture halls are always packed. At first, we woke up by 6 am to secure a space for lectures.  I am inclined to think the fees we

Do you pick School of Nursing or University?

Image
Lovely Nurses, this one is for you, Let's discuss. To become a nurse in Nigeria you need to go through, School of Nursing (SON) or the University.  Which one do you think is better? I will tell you that they both have their perks and the downside. I went through both. SON Perks! Sound practical experience 3 years of study only You can still travel and practice outside Nigeria with just your RN certificate, (this will be an extensive topic). Guys what other perks do you have with SON??? Oh yes some pay stipend. I know i was paid N10,000 back then. School fees were super-cheap too. Mine was N2,000 only. University perks! Sound body of knowledge More interaction with other students. You can easily transfer to another department, if you feel nursing is not for you. (Not easy though but you can). Unfortunately its 5 years which can give you opportunity to right your wrongs academically.
