Do you know you can have a career change or start a new Career at any stage in your life? Amazing!!!

Hi guys we are here with Melvin, who is a lawyer and also a Nurse.
Welcome to Nurses nuggets and careers. You have had an amazing journey and has been enjoying your career with lots of experiences.

1)May we meet you?
Hi, I am Melvin from Imo state, Nigeria

2) Please tell us about you, your educational and practice background.

I am a lawyer in Nigeria and now a nurse in Texas, USA. I presently work with a healthcare facility in Dallas, Texas.

3)These are 2 different locations and 2 different professions. Both are so unique and does meet at some point. Tell us your journey and your story about becoming a health care worker in the USA.

Practicing Law in Nigeria never gave me self accomplishment and fulfillment I needed. It was like something was missing. When I moved to the US, a friend of mine suggested I should try nursing as a career, which I did. Since then my life has never been the same. For me Nursing is a calling and not a career.

4) What is your experience working as a health care giver in this pandemic?

It has been like living and working in hell. It has been the hardest time of my life. Waking up,  not knowing what the day has for you. Constantly checking your temperature and observing yourself on the mirror for self-assessment. It has been challenging over here in the US. Being a healthcare front liner is like being a soldier in a war front, but this war is against Covid-19. So we will fight with all our wits, guts and strengths until we are successful. Please do stay home and practice social distancing. We need you all healthy and alive.

5) What recommendations can you give to fellow health care givers during this pandemic?

Working during this pandemic requires strength and commitment. Follow the required safety procedures and stay safe. Your family and friends need you alive. The virus is a killer, let’s go out there and save the world. More especially, we need to protect ourselves and our families.

6) How do you think nursing practice will change post-covid?

This pandemic has impacted nursing practice tremendously. Some nurses are already quitting the profession and less number of people are joining the profession due to safety concerns. But I tell you, the world needs us, someone has to protect it against existing and new diseases. Like I earlier said, it is a calling. You don’t run away from your calling when things get hard.

7) What's your view on health care workers who risk their lives practicing with inadequate PPE.

It is never acceptable. We have families and friends who love and depend on us. So they need us alive.  The governments should make the provision of adequate PPE a priority in order to curtail the spread of this killer virus. Nursing is a profession for the brave and the chosen.  So my question to you is: are you brave/chosen? If your answer is affirmative, then you are welcome to join our noble profession.
